If your little one hasn't quite mastered the art of tying their shoelaces yet, then this DIY is for them! After all, it’s one less thing you’ll have to do in the morning! To make learning to tie shoelaces a little more fun, we’ve created this easy craft to get the ball rolling.

Making your cardboard shoe template is super simple, and the kids will love getting involved and designing their own DIY shoes. To get started, you’ll need:

  • Cardboard
  • Acrylic paint
  • A black marker
  • A hole punch
  • Shoelaces (or simply use string or ribbon!)

Once you have your materials, the first thing you’ll want to do is trace the outline of your child’s foot onto a piece of scrap cardboard. We used a black marker to get the job done.

Now that you’ve got the basic outline of your shoes, you can get started with the fun part: decorating! We couldn’t decide on one color so we opted for the next best thing: every color. Tip: if you don’t have any paint on hand, you could also use markers, coloring pencils or crayons.

Once you’re happy with your funky shoe designs, you can carefully cut out your cardboard shoe templates.

Next, we want to create holes in our shoe templates to weave the shoelace through. Tip: If you don’t have a hole puncher, a needle and skewer work wonders. However, this should only be done by an adult.

Now for the most important part: weaving the shoelaces! You can show your children how to weave the shoelaces (or ribbon, depending on what you’ve got at home) by pulling them through the holes. And most importantly, you can show them how to tie their laces!

See, that wasn’t too difficult! Encouraging your kids to use this daily activity will not only save you time during your morning routine, but it will also teach your child the important soft skill of being patient, and understanding that it takes time to achieve good results!

And voila! Here’s how your DIY cardboard shoelace template will look in the end.
